Did you know?
  • The #1 resident complaint involves unsightly, cracked and lifted sidewalks
  • One of the top three rated safety hazards in your neighborhood is uneven sidewalks.
  • Very little variance in sidewalk heights violates the standard ADA safety requirement, putting your council at greater risk for safety hazards and resident lawsuits. (ADA Act 0f 1990)

Q: What is sidewalk grinding? And why is it important?

A: Concrete Grinding is the scarification process used to remove the upper surface of a slab of concrete by using an abrasive machine called a scarifier. This process is used to remove bumps, smooth uneven surface and restore pavement rideability and aesthetics.

Q: What are the ADA standards?

A: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 states that sidewalks can not
have more than ¼ inch vertical change at any joint or crack. Offsets must be
tapered at a minimum1:8 slope requirement.

Q: Are all sidewalk grinding companies the same?

A: NO! Concrete grinding can look terrible if performed by an inexperienced equipment operator.  Every grind should be uniform in appearance with a straight backline and few, if any, scars on the adjacent slab.  Channel Islands Sidewalk Grinding is a great choice when it comes to choosing an experienced grinder.

Q: When is sidewalk grinding used instead of sidewalk replacement?

A: Misaligned sidewalks with up to a 2 inch vertical offset can be safely ground back down to eliminate dangerous trip hazards. Grinding sidewalks with a vertical variance greater than 2 inches weakens the slabs, so it is better to replace them.

Q: Is sidewalk grinding cost effective?

A: YES! Sidewalk grinding makes minor height adjustments to parts of existing
slabs and is much less expensive than replacing entire slabs.

Q: How do you get started?

A: Getting started is as easy as making a phone call. Channel Islands Sidewalk Grinding professionals are standing by to answer any questions you may have about the sidewalk grinding procedure to help you make an informed decision on how to make your neighborhood a safer place.
